About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint struck nearly 4.47 billion cents in 1977. Jimmy Carter had taken office in January, inheriting an economy plagued by inflation and unemployment. The country was still absorbing the cultural aftershocks of the 1960s and early 1970s. Star Wars opened in theaters in May and reshaped American popular culture overnight.

The 1977 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark and is extremely common. It circulated in enormous quantities during a period when inflation continued to erode the purchasing power of all American currency, the penny included. Collectors consider it a standard, widely available issue.
