About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint produced nearly 4.96 billion cents in 2001, a year that would be forever defined by a single date. On September 11, terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners. Two struck the World Trade Center towers in New York City, one hit the Pentagon, and one crashed in a Pennsylvania field after passengers fought back. Nearly 3,000 people died. The attacks reshaped American foreign policy, domestic security, and the national psyche in ways that persist decades later.

The 2001 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark. Billions of these coins were already in circulation by September. The coin itself is common in all grades, but the year stamped on its face carries a weight that no other date in the Memorial series can match.
