The 2000-S Maryland Silver Proof Quarter celebrates the seventh state admitted to the Union, and its reverse pulls together two distinctly Maryland images: the wooden dome of the Maryland State House in Annapolis and a pair of white oak clusters flanking the building. The State House dome is the oldest still in continuous legislative use in the country and was built without nails, framed entirely with wooden pegs in the 1780s. White oak became the state tree in 1941, and pairing it with the seat of government gave the design a civic-and-natural balance that suited Maryland's colonial identity. On silver proofs the dome's vertical ribs and the oak cluster veins frost with a sharpness clad proofs cannot quite match, which is why deluxe-set collectors reach for these strikes when assembling display sets of the state series.
San Francisco produced 965,421 silver proofs of the Maryland quarter, the standard mintage across every 2000 silver proof state issue, and authentication begins with composition. The coin is 90% silver and 10% copper, the silver proof standard the Mint maintained from 1992 through 2018 before switching to 99.9% silver in 2019. Weight is the single most reliable diagnostic at 6.25 grams against 5.67 grams for clad proofs, a difference any modern jeweler's scale catches immediately. Diameter is 24.3mm, identical to the clad version, so calipers alone will not separate them. Surfaces should read silvery-white and reflective rather than warm-toned like the copper-nickel proofs, with squared rims, deeply mirrored fields, and frosted devices on Cameo and Deep Cameo grades. The dome architecture is the contrast magnet on this design, which is why high-grade DCAM examples are sought specifically for that one focal point.
