About this coinHistory

The 2000-S South Carolina Silver Proof Quarter honors the eighth state admitted to the Union, and its reverse is one of the more crowded designs in the early state series. A Carolina wren perches above sprigs of yellow jessamine while a palmetto tree rises beside a state outline, packing the official state bird, state flower, and state tree into a single field. The palmetto carries an extra layer of weight: the wood absorbed British cannonballs during the 1776 defense of Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island, which is how the tree became South Carolina's enduring emblem. Silver proofs render the wren's body feathers, the jessamine petals, and the palmetto fronds with a depth of frosted detail clad proofs struggle to reproduce, and high-grade DCAM examples remain the format collectors hunt for set displays.

San Francisco struck 965,421 silver proofs of the South Carolina quarter, the consistent 2000 silver proof set figure, and authentication starts with composition. The coin is 90% silver and 10% copper, the silver proof standard from 1992 through 2018 before the Mint moved to 99.9% silver in 2019. Weight is the single most efficient diagnostic at 6.25 grams compared with 5.67 grams for clad proofs, a gap modern jeweler's scales register immediately. Diameter is unchanged at 24.3mm against the clad version, so calipers will not distinguish the two formats. Surfaces should appear silvery-white and reflective rather than the warmer tone of clad proofs, with squared rims, deeply mirrored fields, and frosted devices on Cameo and Deep Cameo strikes. Because the design crowds three subjects into one field, the contrast windows on this issue are smaller than on most state reverses, which makes DCAM specimens with full bird-flower-tree separation particularly prized.
