The 2000-S New Hampshire Silver Proof Quarter commemorates the ninth state admitted to the Union, and its reverse carries a poignant subject: the Old Man of the Mountain, the granite rock formation in Franconia Notch that resembled a human profile in stone. The image had been New Hampshire's official emblem since 1945, but the formation collapsed on May 3, 2003, making every coin in this series a portrait of something that no longer exists. Nine stars accompany the profile, marking New Hampshire's order in admission, with the motto "Live Free or Die" rounding out the field. Silver proofs render the granite ledges, brow ridge, and chin overhang of the Old Man with a level of frost the clad proofs cannot match, which gives the format unusual significance for a coin that has become a quiet memorial to a lost natural landmark.
San Francisco struck 965,421 silver proofs of the New Hampshire quarter, the standard 2000 silver proof mintage, and authentication begins with composition. The coin is 90% silver and 10% copper, the silver proof standard from 1992 through 2018 before the Mint shifted to 99.9% silver in 2019. Weight is the single most efficient diagnostic at 6.25 grams against 5.67 grams for clad proofs, a difference any jeweler's scale resolves at a glance. Diameter is 24.3mm, identical to the clad strike, so calipers will not separate the two formats. Surfaces read silvery-white and reflective rather than the warmer tone of copper-nickel proofs, with squared rims, deeply mirrored fields, and frosted devices on Cameo and Deep Cameo specimens. The Old Man's profile and the nine stars are the contrast targets to inspect, and DCAM grades with full granite texture on the cheek and brow draw the strongest collector demand.
