About this coinHistory

The 2002-P Indiana quarter ran as the nineteenth program release and the fourth of the year, matching the Hoosier State's position in the order of statehood. Sculptor-engraver Donna Weaver worked the reverse: an Indianapolis 500-style open-wheel racecar superimposed on an outline of Indiana, ringed by nineteen stars for the nineteenth state to enter the Union in 1816, with the legend "Crossroads of America" curving along the bottom. The motto is the state's official line and ties to Indiana's role as a midcontinent transportation hub long before the modern interstate system. Philadelphia struck 362,600,000 pieces, the higher of the two Indiana mintages and a typical year-4 P-mint output that matched the program's standard P-over-D split.

Strike on the Indiana design holds up well across the central racecar and state outline, but the design's small elements demand sharp dies to render every detail. The nineteen stars arranged around the field are the natural first elements to soften under die wear, and the racecar's open cockpit and exhaust pipes can drop out on late-die-state coins. The "Crossroads of America" lettering renders cleanly on most early-die-state strikes. Washington's cheek field caps obverse grading as usual; contact marks scattered across the cheek and temple drop many otherwise-strong coins short of MS67. PCGS and NGC populations are heavy at MS66, thinner at MS67, and meaningfully scarce at MS68 in the population reports kept by the two major third-party grading services (TPGs). No FS-listed varieties have anchored to the issue.

Collecting demand for the 2002-P Indiana runs steady, set by registry-set completion and by strong cross-appeal to motorsports and racing collectors, especially around Memorial Day each year when the Indianapolis 500 lifts attention on the design. The racecar's distinctive shape gives the coin recognizable shelf presence next to the more landscape-oriented 2002 issues. Roll searchers continue to pull premium strikes for full-detail gems where every star and the cockpit edge render sharply. For wider context, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
