About this coinHistory

The 2002-P Louisiana quarter ran as the eighteenth program release and the third of the year, matching the Pelican State's spot in the order of statehood. Sculptor-engraver John Mercanti worked the reverse: an outline of the Louisiana Purchase territory laid across a smaller map of the United States, a pelican (the state bird) in flight at left, and a trumpet for the state's jazz heritage at right, with the legend "Louisiana Purchase" curving across the top. The 1803 purchase doubled the size of the young United States in a single stroke and traced the historical foundation Louisiana chose to anchor its quarter design around. Philadelphia struck 362,000,000 pieces, a typical year-4 P-mint output and just slightly below the matching Denver figure for an unusually even P-D split.

Strike on the Louisiana design generally comes up well-defined. The pelican's wings and head render cleanly on most early-die-state coins, and the trumpet's bell and valves hold their detail through moderate die wear, though the small map of the United States behind the territory outline can show die-fill on late-state strikes. Washington's cheek field caps obverse grading as usual; contact marks scattered across the cheek and temple drop many otherwise-strong coins short of MS67. PCGS and NGC populations are heavy at MS66, thinner at MS67, and meaningfully scarce at MS68 in the population reports kept by the two major third-party grading services (TPGs). No FS-listed varieties have anchored to the issue, though minor die cracks along the territory boundary turn up on cherrypicked rolls.

Collecting demand for the 2002-P Louisiana runs steady, set by registry-set completion and by cross-appeal to collectors of jazz-themed and historical-territory pieces. The Mercanti reverse photographs cleanly and gives the coin recognizable shelf presence next to the more figural 2002 issues. Roll searchers continue to pull premium strikes for full-feather gems where the pelican's wing detail and the trumpet's valves render sharply.
