About this coinHistory

The 2002-P Mississippi quarter closed the program's fourth year as the twentieth release overall, matching the Magnolia State's spot in the order of statehood. Sculptor-engraver Donna Weaver worked the reverse: two large magnolia blossoms in full bloom with leaves and a branch arching across the field, and the legend "The Magnolia State" curving along the bottom. The magnolia is the state flower and the state tree, and the floral focus made the Mississippi quarter the most botanically oriented design of the 2002 lineup, with no buildings, vehicles, or human figures on the reverse. Philadelphia struck 290,000,000 pieces, the higher of the two Mississippi mintages by a thin margin and one of the lower year-4 P-mint outputs as the program continued cooling at midcourse.

Strike on the Mississippi design depends almost entirely on petal detail. The two magnolia blossoms carry the visual weight of the entire reverse, and high-grade examples should show clean separation between the layered petals and crisp definition along the branch and leaves. These are the natural first elements to drop out on late-die-state coins, and the small "The Magnolia State" lettering can show die-fill under heavy die wear. Washington's cheek field caps obverse grading as usual; contact marks scattered across the cheek and temple drop many otherwise-strong coins short of MS67. PCGS and NGC populations are heavy at MS66, thinner at MS67, and meaningfully scarce at MS68 in the population reports kept by the two major third-party grading services (TPGs). No FS-listed varieties have anchored to the issue.

Collecting demand for the 2002-P Mississippi runs steady, set by registry-set completion and by the design's broad appeal to floral and botanical cross-collectors. The all-flora reverse gives the coin a distinctive visual identity next to the more action-oriented 2002 issues. Roll searchers continue to pull premium strikes for full-petal gems where the layered blossoms render cleanly, and the relatively low Philadelphia mintage rewards careful searching.
