About this coinHistory

Denver's 2016 Fort Moultrie production reached 210,000,000 pieces, running 55.6 million ahead of Philadelphia's 154,400,000 and closing the 2016 ATB year on a higher-output note from the Denver facility than Philadelphia could match. Richard Masters's reverse, with Sergeant William Jasper raising the colors during the June 28, 1776 British naval assault on Charleston Harbor, was the first of two 2016-2017 Masters-credited ATB designs and one of the more action-oriented Revolutionary War compositions in the program's run. Jasper himself died at the Siege of Savannah three years later.

Strike quality on the Denver issue often runs marginally crisper than Philadelphia in the flag detail and the fort's log texture, though die-state variation across the production run is the bigger factor in any specific example's grade. The composition follows the standard clad formula (75% copper-nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 5.67 grams total weight, 24.26 mm diameter), and authentication concerns are essentially nil for circulation-strike modern clad coinage. Counterfeiters do not target this issue: face-value clad quarters do not support a profit margin on alteration or fabrication. The high-grade market runs through PCGS and NGC, with raw MS65 to MS66 examples remaining findable in original Denver bank rolls.

The 2016-D Fort Moultrie is a Regular-classification issue where the certified-population pattern follows the standard 2016 distribution but with the design's figural appeal sustaining slightly firmer demand at MS68. Registry set builders working toward the complete 56-design run absorb the limited top-grade output, and listing prices for true MS68 examples have held steady year over year despite the high raw mintage. Roll hunters in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic still report occasional MS65 cherry-picks from original bank-wrapped quarters of this date. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
