About this coinHistory

Denver's 2016 Shawnee production reached 223,200,000 pieces, running 67.6 million ahead of Philadelphia's 155,600,000 for the same design and ranking as the higher of the two Shawnee outputs. The spread tracks broader 2016 ordering patterns in which Denver consistently outpaced Philadelphia on three of the five designs, a Federal Reserve allocation pattern that varied design-by-design rather than mint-by-mint across the year. Susan Gamble's reverse, with the Camel Rock formation anchoring the Illinois wilderness scene, was the only national-forest-in-Illinois entry the series produced and the first of five Gamble-credited ATB designs.

Strike quality on the Denver issue often runs marginally crisper than Philadelphia in the rock-face shadowing and the canopy texture, though die-state variation across the production run is the bigger factor in any specific example's grade. The composition follows the standard clad formula (75% copper-nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 5.67 grams total weight, 24.26 mm diameter), and authentication concerns are essentially nil for circulation-strike modern clad coinage. Counterfeiters do not target this issue: there is no profit margin in faking a coin that sells for face value in circulated condition and modest premiums even in mint-state grades. The high-grade market runs through PCGS and NGC, with raw examples in the MS65 to MS66 band remaining findable in original bank-wrapped rolls.

The 2016-D Shawnee is a Regular-classification issue where the collecting interest centers on the MS67-plus tier. Population reports show the certified supply thinning meaningfully at MS68, where roughly the same dynamic that affects other 2016 dates kicks in: registry set builders absorb the limited high-grade output and the listing prices for those grades hold their premium. Roll hunters in the Midwest still report occasional MS65 cherry-picks from original Denver bank rolls, though the easy candy has thinned considerably as the year ages. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
