About this coinHistory

Denver's 2016 Theodore Roosevelt output reached 230,800,000 pieces, edging Philadelphia's 228,800,000 by 2 million and making the design one of the most-produced ATB entries in either mint's 2016 ledger. The narrow P-versus-D spread is unusual for the year, which saw wider gaps on the other four 2016 designs, and the Roosevelt date stands as one of the closer Philadelphia-Denver match-ups of the entire program. Joel Iskowitz's reverse, with Roosevelt mounted in the North Dakota badlands, draws on the years the future president spent ranching at Maltese Cross and Elkhorn near the present Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Strike quality on the Denver issue often runs marginally crisper than Philadelphia in the badlands terrain texture and the horse's musculature, though die-state variation across the production run is the bigger factor in any specific example's grade. The composition follows the standard clad formula (75% copper-nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 5.67 grams total weight, 24.26 mm diameter), and authentication concerns are essentially nil for circulation-strike modern clad coinage. Counterfeiters do not target this issue: face-value clad quarters offer no margin to support the work of faking them. The high-grade market runs through PCGS and NGC, with raw MS65 to MS66 examples remaining findable in original Denver bank rolls.

The 2016-D Theodore Roosevelt is a Regular-classification issue with one of the most popular reverse compositions in the series, which translates into firm demand at MS68 even though the raw mintage is among the higher 2016 figures. Registry set builders absorb the limited top-grade supply, and the date typically prices alongside its Philadelphia counterpart in slabbed grades with a slight premium for the visual-appeal factor. Roll hunters in the Mountain West still report occasional MS65 cherry-picks from original bank-wrapped Denver rolls, though the easy candy thinned out by mid-2017. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
