About this coinHistory

The 2006-D Colorado Satin Finish Proof carries the Denver Mint's mark and was distributed exclusively through the U.S. Mint's Annual Uncirculated Coin Set, the satin-format collector product that had launched the previous year. Norman E. Nemeth's reverse design depicts the snow-capped Rocky Mountain front range with Pikes Peak, the celebrated 14,115-foot summit that inspired Katharine Lee Bates's "America the Beautiful", rising from a forested mid-ground. "Colorful Colorado" arches as the descriptive inscription above the scene. Under satin striking, the mountain ridgelines, the alpine snow lines, and the textured tree canopy all carry a uniform matte sheen produced by specially treated dies, a finish that reads as immediately distinct from Denver's circulation quarters and from the year's San Francisco mirrored proofs. Denver's allotment of 847,361 pieces matched Philadelphia and reflected the same 2006 set distribution.

Authentication relies on three observable features. The uniform satin surface, produced by acid-etched or bead-blasted dies, eliminates both the mirrored polish that defines a true proof and the rotating cartwheel luster found on a Denver business strike, there is no field-versus-device contrast and no traveling brilliance under angled light. The D mintmark, positioned above Washington's queue on the obverse, identifies Denver striking and rules out the silver and clad mirror proofs from San Francisco that year. The as-struck surface is generally intact on coins recovered from original Mint Set packaging, since none of these examples entered commerce. Composition is the standard cupronickel-clad alloy, 91.67% copper / 8.33% nickel overall, with a 75/25 outer cladding over a pure copper core, at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, dimensionally identical to the circulation issue. PCGS and NGC use SP or SMS attribution rather than PR, a labeling convention that distinguishes these from true San Francisco proofs in third-party holders.

Certified populations cluster in the SP67 through SP69 range, with SP70 specimens appearing often enough that top-pop premiums remain modest. The Pikes Peak design is widely considered one of the program's strongest mountain-landscape compositions; for the full release sequence and design context, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
