About this coinHistory

The 2006-D Nevada Satin Finish Proof represents the Denver Mint's contribution to that year's Annual Uncirculated Coin Set, a collector product the U.S. Mint launched in 2005 to elevate the standard Mint Set format with specially treated dies. Don Everhart's reverse shows three wild mustangs in full gallop across a sagebrush plain, with the Sierra Nevada range rising behind them and a sunrise expanding across the horizon; "The Silver State" arcs above the central scene. Under satin striking, the mountain ridgelines, the horses' flowing manes, and the foreground brush all read with a uniform low-luster finish that distinguishes the coin instantly from both Denver's circulation production and the mirror proofs struck that year in San Francisco. Denver's contribution to the 2006 set was capped at 847,361 pieces, the same per-mint allocation as Philadelphia, and a substantial drop from the 1,160,000 pieces issued in 2005's debut year.

The authentication path runs through surface texture first. Satin examples show a uniform matte sheen across both fields and devices, the product of acid-etched or sandblasted dies rather than the mirror-polished and frost-pickled dies used at the San Francisco proof facility. There is no rotating cartwheel luster of the sort that travels across a Denver business strike when tilted under a light, and no mirror-and-cameo contrast either. The D mintmark sits above the wig ribbon on the obverse; no S satin variants exist, since San Francisco produced only mirrored proofs in this era. Composition is standard cupronickel clad, 91.67% copper / 8.33% nickel by total weight, with a 75/25 outer cladding over a pure copper core, at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, identical to the circulation specification. Third-party graders use SP (Specimen) or SMS designations rather than PR, a label distinction worth noting when sourcing certified examples.

Because none of these coins entered circulation, the as-struck surface generally survives intact on examples pulled from sealed Mint Set packaging. Most certified pieces fall into the SP67 to SP69 range, with SP70 examples appearing in sufficient numbers that the top-pop premium remains modest. Nevada's mustang reverse was Everhart's lone statehood design for 2006; for the broader run, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
