About this coinHistory

The 2006-D South Dakota Satin Finish Proof closes out the year's five-state Annual Uncirculated Coin Set run with the Denver Mint's contribution. John Mercanti's reverse design assembles three of the state's defining images into a single narrative panorama: the four presidential heads of Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the upper field, a Chinese ring-necked pheasant in mid-flight across the central plane, and a stalk of ripening wheat anchoring the right margin. The composition links the Black Hills monument in the west to the eastern agricultural plains in one continuous design statement. Satin striking gives every element a uniform low-luster matte surface, the carved granite faces, the layered pheasant plumage, and the textured grain heads on the wheat, produced by specially treated dies that distinguish the coin instantly from Denver's circulation quarters and from the year's San Francisco mirror proofs. Denver's allotment of 847,361 pieces matched Philadelphia's exactly, with the per-mint figure 27% below the 1,160,000 pieces struck for 2005's inaugural satin year.

The authentication framework relies on three observable features. The uniform satin sheen across both fields and design elements, created by acid-etched or bead-blasted dies, rules out both the mirrored fields of a true proof and the rotating cartwheel luster typical of a Denver business strike, since neither texture appears anywhere on a satin specimen. The D mintmark above Washington's queue identifies Denver origin and distinguishes the coin from the year's San Francisco mirrored proofs; no S satin variants exist. The as-struck surface generally survives intact on examples recovered from sealed Mint Set packaging, since no satin coins entered commerce. Composition is the standard cupronickel-clad alloy, 91.67% copper / 8.33% nickel overall, with a 75/25 outer cladding bonded to a pure copper core, at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, dimensionally matching the circulation issue. PCGS and NGC certify these as SP or SMS rather than PR, a labeling distinction worth confirming when reviewing slabbed examples.

Certified populations cluster in the SP67 through SP69 band, with SP70 examples appearing often enough that top-pop premiums stay restrained. South Dakota's dense three-element reverse closed out 2006 as one of the program's most visually packed design statements; for the broader release context, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
