About this coinHistory

The 2006-D North Dakota Satin Finish Proof carries the Denver Mint's mark and was distributed exclusively through the U.S. Mint's Annual Uncirculated Coin Set, the second year of the satin-format collector product launched in 2005. Donna Weaver's reverse design renders a pair of American bison grazing on the rolling slopes of the western badlands, the same eroded country that now anchors Theodore Roosevelt National Park along the Little Missouri River. The composition relies on textural contrast across three planes: the animals' shaggy winter coats in the foreground, the layered sedimentary bluffs behind them, and the open prairie sky in the upper field. Satin striking converts all three zones into a uniform matte expanse, producing a surface that reads as visibly distinct from both Denver's circulation production and the year's San Francisco mirror proofs. Denver's allotment of 847,361 pieces matched Philadelphia's exactly.

Three diagnostics carry the authentication. First, the uniform satin sheen across fields and devices alike, created by acid-etched or bead-blasted dies, rules out both the mirrored fields of a true proof and the rotating cartwheel luster typical of a Denver business strike. Second, the D mintmark above Washington's queue identifies Denver origin and distinguishes the coin from the year's San Francisco mirrored quarters, since no S satin variants exist. Third, the as-struck surface generally survives intact on specimens extracted from sealed Mint Set packaging, given that no satin coins entered commerce. Composition is the standard cupronickel-clad alloy, 91.67% copper / 8.33% nickel overall, with a 75/25 outer cladding bonded to a pure copper core, at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, dimensionally matching circulation. PCGS and NGC use SP or SMS attribution rather than PR, a labeling convention worth confirming when reviewing certified examples.

Certified populations cluster in the SP67 through SP69 range, with SP70 specimens available often enough that top-pop premiums remain restrained. The badlands-and-bison reverse stands among the program's most evocative wildlife designs; for the full release context, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
