About this coinHistory

Alaska put its food chain on a coin. Charles Vickers sculpted a brown bear in profile rearing slightly forward with a salmon caught in its jaws, mid-river, the unmistakable diagonal posture of a Katmai bear pulling sockeye from a shallow run. The North Star floats above the scene as a small bright point, doubling as the navigational marker that names Alaska as the northernmost state and as the symbol that has anchored the state flag since the 1927 schoolboy design competition. "The Great Land" runs along the lower border, the English translation of the Aleut "Alyeska" that gave the state its name. In proof format, the bear's individual fur tufts hold separately frosted definition, the salmon's scales catch sharper light along its arc, the river surface registers as a subtle textural plane rather than a single flat field, and the North Star punches through the mirrored sky with clean cameo separation. The design hit harder than most program reverses because it asked the proof format to do real work distinguishing fur from fish from water from sky.

San Francisco produced 2,078,112 clad proofs of the Alaska issue for the 2008 Proof Set and the standalone 50 State Quarters Proof Set distributions. Distinguishing a true proof from a prooflike business strike rewards careful inspection. Under angled light, a genuine proof returns the watery hall-of-mirrors reflectivity that comes from polished dies pressing polished planchets under elevated tonnage; prooflike circulation pieces betray themselves through radial flow lines running outward from the centers. The rims register squared and sharp from close-collar proof striking, distinct from the rounded shoulders typical of normal production. Under a 10x loupe, die-polish lines run in consistent parallel patterns across the open fields, while cleaning hairlines scatter in random directions across the surface. Cupronickel-clad construction holds at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, with the copper core visible as a thin reddish stripe on the edge. PCGS and NGC Cameo and Deep Cameo designations carry significant premiums on the bear-and-salmon scene where the fur frost stays untouched.
