About this coinHistory

Hawaii closed the entire program with a portrait that demanded sculptural ambition. Don Everhart's reverse renders the statue of King Kamehameha I in full extended-arm posture, his right hand raised in welcome, his left holding a feathered spear of office, the cape and warrior helmet rendered with detail that pushes the small canvas to its limit. The Hawaiian island chain stretches in silhouette to the king's left, the eight major islands arranged in their actual geographic order from Niihau down to the Big Island. The motto "Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka Aina I Ka Pono" curves along the lower border in the language Kamehameha himself spoke. In proof format, the cape draping reads as individually frosted folds, the feathered helmet holds cameo separation from the king's profile beneath, and the island chain registers as discrete frosted shapes rather than a blurred coastline. Kamehameha unified the archipelago under one rule in 1810, and pairing that founder figure with the islands he joined gave the closing coin of the program a weight commensurate with its position.

The San Francisco Mint struck 2,078,112 clad proofs of the Hawaii issue for the 2008 Proof Set and the dedicated 50 State Quarters Proof Set, the very last clad proofs of the nine-year program. Authentication of a true proof against a prooflike business strike follows the established discipline. Tilt the coin under angled light: a genuine proof returns watery, hall-of-mirrors reflectivity from polished dies pressing polished planchets under elevated tonnage, while a prooflike circulation piece shows radial flow lines running outward from the center. The rims register squared and sharp from close-collar proof striking, distinct from the rounded shoulders of normal production. Under a 10x loupe, die-polish lines run in consistent parallel directions across the open fields, while cleaning hairlines scatter chaotically. Cupronickel-clad construction holds at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, with the copper core visible as a thin reddish stripe on the edge. PCGS and NGC Cameo and Deep Cameo designations carry significant premiums, especially where Kamehameha's cape and helmet frost remain pristine.
