The composition reads almost as a piece of modern flag design rather than commemorative coinage, which suits a state whose flag itself is widely considered the most distinctive in the union. In proof execution, the Zia sun's four directional bundles each receive consistent cameo frost, the radiating lines stay legible without bleeding into one another, and the state outline holds a clean sharp boundary against the mirrored fields. The Zia symbol carries deep cultural weight for the Pueblo of Zia and remains protected as cultural patrimony; the coin's use was negotiated with respect for that heritage, and Everhart's restrained treatment honored the source.

San Francisco produced 2,078,112 clad proofs of the New Mexico issue for the 2008 Proof Set and the standalone 50 State Quarters Proof Set distributions.
