About this coinHistory

2026-03-22, San Francisco struck 1,192,908 Alaska silver proofs in 2008 for the Silver Proof Set, the collector-tier companion to the clad proof. Charles Vickers's reverse captures a Kodiak brown bear emerging from a stream with a salmon held crosswise in its jaws, the North Star fixed in the upper-right field above the scene. The inscription "The Great Land," a translation of the Aleut name "Alyeska" that gave the state its English name, anchors the upper register, with the salmon and the bear forming a vertical compact that reads as a single Pacific Northwest moment frozen at the instant of the catch. On a 90% silver planchet, the wet fur along the bear's flanks, the scales of the salmon, and the eight-rayed North Star gain a precision the clad cannot match, the bright white metal turning the wildlife composition into a museum-diorama clarity against the deeply mirrored fields.

Authenticating a 2008-S Alaska Silver Proof begins at the scale. A genuine silver example weighs 6.25 grams against the 5.67-gram clad proof, and that 0.58-gram differential is the single most efficient diagnostic in the collector's toolkit. The 90% silver, 10% copper composition produces a silvery-white reflective surface noticeably brighter than the slightly grayer clad cast, and viewing the 24.3mm edge straight on reveals a solid silver color rather than the copper-cored sandwich stripe of clad coinage. Squared, sharp rims and heavily frosted Cameo or Deep Cameo devices set against deeply mirrored fields complete the visual signature. Examine the bear's wet shoulder fur, the cross-held salmon between its jaws, and the points of the North Star under angled light for the heavy frost contrast that defines a properly struck silver proof.

None of the 2008 Alaska silver proofs entered circulation; all were sold through U.S. Mint Silver Proof Set packaging, and survival rates remain extremely high. Modern market value reflects both the silver bullion content and the proof finish, with Deep Cameo and PR70 examples carrying the strongest premiums. The bear-and-salmon subject draws topical interest from Pacific-wildlife and last-frontier collectors, who pair the Alaska issue with the 2008 Hawaii Kamehameha as the program's two non-contiguous-state closers on the silver tier.
