About this coinHistory

The 2020-S Maryland proof was struck at San Francisco in 101,593 pieces and distributed through the four-coin 2020 American Innovation proof set, which the Mint released on October 8, 2020. The figure is consistent across all four 2020 American Innovation proofs, since the Mint produced them as a single annual subscription product rather than to date-specific demand. Maryland ratified the Constitution on April 28, 1788, the seventh state, which placed the Hubble Space Telescope design second in the 2020 release order. The Space Telescope Science Institute on the Johns Hopkins University campus in Baltimore has run Hubble's science program since 1990, scheduling observations and archiving data for the global astronomical community.

Joseph Menna designed and sculpted the reverse, showing Hubble in low orbit above a curved Earth limb against a starfield, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE," and "MARYLAND" around the rim. The proof finish suits the design: the frosted devices throw the telescope's cylindrical optical-tube assembly and twin solar arrays into sharp relief against the deeply mirrored fields, and the starfield reads as discrete frosted points rather than the flatter texture business strikes show. Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, is the diagnostic to check. The Earth limb is the technical risk area: late-die-state proofs can show softening in the terminator gradient where mirrored field meets frosted device, which is the first place a grader looks when separating PR69 from PR70.

For collectors, the 2020-S Maryland proof is a year-set and series-set requirement and trades with the rest of the 2020 proof slate. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, certify it routinely at PR69 and PR70 with Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo designations; price separation at PR70 DCAM is modest but real. The classification on this site is set to Regular; rarity context for the proof lives in the narrative rather than a badge, consistent with site policy that proof entries do not carry circulation-tier marks. Recommended certified at PR70 DCAM for registry buyers and acceptable raw in original Mint packaging with the certificate of authenticity. Background on the program is covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
