About this coinHistory

San Francisco's 2020 Massachusetts proof was struck in 101,593 coins, distributed through the year's American Innovation Dollar Proof set and as a single-design proof option, and it sits well below the 2019 proof mintages that the program had established the year prior. Massachusetts ratified the Constitution on February 6, 1788 as the sixth state, fixing the slot for the design in the statehood-order release schedule. The honoree is Alexander Graham Bell, whose Massachusetts work spanned the telephone patent filing of February 14, 1876, the first intelligible call to Thomas Watson in Boston that March, and the deafness research at the Boston School for Deaf Mutes that informed the technical path Bell followed toward voice transmission.

Standard proof finishing on the Christina Hess reverse mirrors the fields and frosts the devices, throwing the central hand and telephone receiver into bright Cameo or Deep Cameo contrast against a black-mirror ground. Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, is the standard finish; Deep Cameo (DCAM at PCGS, Ultra Cameo at NGC) is the heaviest contrast designation on the slab. The radiating sound-wave field is the design element most likely to show subtle imperfections, since shallow incused lines on a mirror field reveal die-handling marks that the frosted devices would mask. Justin Kunz's Statue of Liberty obverse, sculpted in relief by Phebe Hemphill, carries the same Cameo treatment. Original Mint packaging with the certificate of authenticity is the standard collector form, whether the coin came in the four-coin proof set or the single-issue option.

The 2020-S Massachusetts Proof trades modestly above issue price, with most market activity at PR69 DCAM and PR70 DCAM grades. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, certify the issue routinely; the PR70 population is the thinner of the two and carries the corresponding premium. The classification on this site is set to Regular, consistent with site policy that proof entries do not carry Key Date or Semi-Key tier marks regardless of mintage. Recommended certified at PR70 DCAM for registry buyers; original-packaging examples are the natural raw form for set collectors. Background on the program is covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
