About this coinHistory

The 2020-S South Carolina proof was struck at San Francisco in 101,593 pieces and distributed through the four-coin 2020 American Innovation proof set. The mintage runs consistent across all four 2020 proofs since the Mint produced the slate as a single annual subscription product. South Carolina ratified the Constitution on May 23, 1788 as the eighth state, placing the design as the closing 2020 release in statehood order. The reverse subject is Septima Poinsette Clark, the Charleston-born educator whose Citizenship Schools curriculum, developed on Johns Island starting in 1957 with Esau Jenkins and Bernice Robinson, taught Black Southerners the reading skills they needed to pass voter-registration tests; the network ultimately trained more than 25,000 teachers across the South before the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The proof finish is built for the design's central group portrait. Clark and three adult students occupy the deeply mirrored field, and on a struck proof the frosted devices read clearly against the polished ground in a way the business strikes from Philadelphia and Denver cannot match. Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, is the diagnostic to check on a raw example, with Deep Cameo (PCGS) or Ultra Cameo (NGC) reserving the strongest contrast on certified examples. Composition follows the Innovation standard: manganese-brass clad at 8.1 grams and 26.5 millimeters, with edge lettering carrying the date, S mintmark, and thirteen stars.

For collectors, the 2020-S South Carolina proof is a year-set and series-set requirement and trades with the rest of the 2020 proof slate. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, certify it routinely at PR69 and PR70 with Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo designations; price separation at PR70 DCAM is modest but real. The classification on this site is set to Regular, consistent with site policy that proofs do not carry Key Date or Semi-Key tier marks regardless of mintage. Recommended certified for registry buyers and acceptable raw in original Mint packaging. Background on the program is covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
