The reverse subject is Septima Poinsette Clark, the Charleston-born educator whose Citizenship Schools curriculum, developed on Johns Island starting in 1957 with Esau Jenkins and Bernice Robinson, taught Black Southerners the reading skills they needed to pass voter-registration tests; the network ultimately trained more than 25,000 teachers across the South before the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
