About this coinHistory

The 2020-S Massachusetts reverse proof is the lowest-mintage entry in the entire 2020 American Innovation Dollar release at 43,258 coins, struck at San Francisco and sold as a single-coin offering rather than as part of a multi-coin set. The figure tracks closely with the comparable 2019 reverse proofs (Georgia 43,420, New Jersey 46,785, Pennsylvania 50,866), confirming that the format settled into the 40,000 to 70,000 range once collectors knew what to expect. Massachusetts ratified the Constitution on February 6, 1788 as the sixth state. The honoree, Alexander Graham Bell, did the work that earned him the slot in Boston: the telephone patent filing of February 14, 1876 and the first intelligible voice transmission to Thomas Watson the following month.

Reverse-proof finishing inverts the standard proof: the fields are frosted and the devices polished to a mirror, which on the Christina Hess design throws the hand, the telephone receiver, and the radiating sound waves into reflective relief against a granular ground. Sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, the reverse responds particularly well to the inverted finish, with the receiver and the curved cord catching light against the matte field. Grading services use the Reverse Proof designation rather than Cameo or Deep Cameo on the slab. Original Mint packaging with the certificate of authenticity is the standard form; the offering shipped in a single-coin display case.

In the collecting market, the 2020-S Massachusetts reverse proof trades meaningfully above face and above the standard 2020 proof, driven by the low mintage and the absence of any subscription-set distribution channel. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, certify the issue routinely at PR70 RP; the PR70 population is the working ceiling for registry buyers. The classification on this site is set to Regular; the rarity story is a low-mintage single-product offering rather than a series key, consistent with site policy that proofs do not carry Key Date or Semi-Key tier marks regardless of mintage. Recommended certified at PR70 RP for registry buyers; original-packaging examples are the natural raw form. Background on the program is covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
