The 2020-S South Carolina reverse proof, struck at San Francisco in 36,409 pieces, is the lowest-mintage reverse proof of the four 2020 American Innovation designs and was sold individually as a single-coin Mint product rather than bundled into a multi-coin set. South Carolina ratified the Constitution on May 23, 1788 as the eighth state. The reverse subject is Septima Poinsette Clark, whose Citizenship Schools curriculum, begun in 1957 on Johns Island with Esau Jenkins and Bernice Robinson, taught reading through the literacy tests and voter-registration forms that Jim Crow states used to disqualify Black applicants; Clark received the Living Legacy Award from President Jimmy Carter in 1979 and South Carolina's Order of the Palmetto in 1982.
Reverse-proof finishing inverts the standard proof: the fields are frosted and the devices polished to a mirror, which on this design throws Clark and the three students into reflective relief against a granular ground. The effect reads especially well on the central group, where the lifted faces and the open primer take the mirror finish while the surrounding texture stays matte. Grading services use the Reverse Proof designation on the slab rather than Cameo or Deep Cameo, since the contrast structure is reversed from the standard proof convention. Original Mint packaging with the certificate of authenticity is the standard collector form, and the Mint released the coin individually with a per-household ordering limit at issue.
In the collecting market, the 2020-S South Carolina reverse proof trades meaningfully above face and above the other three 2020 South Carolina issues, driven by the low mintage and the absence of any subscription-set distribution channel. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, certify it routinely at PR69 and PR70 Reverse Proof. The classification on this site is set to Regular; the rarity story is a low-mintage single-product offering rather than a series key, consistent with site policy that proofs do not carry Key Date or Semi-Key tier marks. Recommended certified at PR70 RP for registry buyers; original-packaging examples are the natural raw form. Background on the program is covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
