About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck only 30,000 examples of the 2025-S Texas Reverse Proof, the lowest-mintage strike format of the four Texas issues and one of the lowest reverse-proof figures in the entire American Innovation series. The figure ties the 2024 Alabama, Illinois, Maine, Missouri reverse proofs and the 2025 Arkansas, Michigan, Florida reverse proofs at the same 30,000 floor, undercutting the 2023 reverse-proof tier of 32,000 each. The 30,000 ties to the 2025 American Innovation Reverse Proof Set, which the U.S. Mint released on December 30, 2025. The reverse proof finish inverts the standard cameo geometry: the EVA-suited astronaut and ISS truss take a polished mirror finish, while the surrounding field is struck with a frosted, matte texture. The polished metal of the EVA suit catches light against the matte black-space field in a way that suggests the gleam of a sun-lit suit against the void, an effect the standard cameo proof can only approximate.

Reverse proof production requires specially prepared dies polished on the relief surfaces and frosted across the field, the opposite of standard proof die preparation, which consumes more die life per coin. That extra cost is part of why reverse proof mintages run a fraction of standard proof mintages across the Innovation series. The 30,000 figure for the 2025 Texas Reverse Proof marks the floor the Mint settled on across the entire 2024 and 2025 reverse-proof runs, a sharp drop from the 49,298 reverse proofs struck for each of the four 2022 state designs. The continuing cap reflects the Mint trimming reverse-proof production to match softening collector demand across 2022 through 2025, even as circulation production held steady at 1,120,000 per strike.

For set builders the 2025-S Reverse Proof is the scarcest of the four Texas strike formats by a wide margin, but the badge remains Regular because the reverse proof is a strike-format distinction, not a key-date scarcity in the traditional sense. The reverse, designed by Ronald Sanders and sculpted by John P. McGraw, depicts an astronaut spacewalk outside the International Space Station, honoring Mission Control at NASA's Johnson Space Center. Original 2025 American Innovation Reverse Proof Set packaging is the cheapest entry point; certified PR69 and PR70 examples trade at modest premiums in TPG holders, with PR70 the practical ceiling.
