About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck the 2026 California American Innovation Dollar in a standard cameo proof finish for the 2026 American Innovation Proof Set and as a single-design proof through the U.S. Mint catalog. The reverse, designed by Artistic Infusion Program artist Elana Hagler and sculpted by U.S. Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill, depicts a young Steve Jobs seated against a northern California landscape of oak-covered rolling hills, with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, CALIFORNIA, STEVE JOBS, and MAKE SOMETHING WONDERFUL. The legend is drawn from a 1995 Jobs interview, later used as the title of the 2023 anthology of his writings curated by Leslie Berlin. California entered the Union on September 9, 1850, which fixes its place in the program's ratification-order rollout among the four 2026 designs honoring Iowa, Wisconsin, California, and Minnesota.

Standard cameo proof production polishes the field dies to a mirror finish and chemically frosts the relief devices, producing the Cameo contrast that defines a modern proof. On this design the contrast lands well on Jobs himself: the frosted facial detail and round eyeglass frame stand out cleanly against the polished sky behind, and the oak-hill background carries enough textural relief that the cameo reads three-dimensionally rather than flat. The MAKE SOMETHING WONDERFUL legend along the lower rim should show fully frosted lettering against polished field. The 2026 obverse also carries a one-year Liberty Bell privy mark with the inscription 250, marking the U.S. Semiquincentennial alongside the standard stylized gear.

The 2026-S Proof mintage has not yet been reported by the Mint as of this writing and will be published with the annual production report after the close of calendar 2026. Recent Innovation Dollar proof mintages have run roughly 800,000 pieces per design at the standard finish, but the eventual 2026 figure depends on Mint subscription numbers and four-coin-set demand. The badge stays Regular: proof entries on the modern dollar program are not classified Key Date or Semi-Key, and rarity context for proofs lives in the prose rather than the badge. Original 2026 American Innovation Proof Set packaging remains the cheapest entry; certified PR69 and PR70 examples in major-service holders trade at modest premiums, with PR70 the practical ceiling. For broader program context, see the American Innovation Dollar series history.
