About this coinHistory

San Francisco produced the 2026-S Iowa Proof as the cameo-finish counterpart to the Philadelphia and Denver business strikes that opened the 2026 American Innovation Dollar program. The reverse honors Dr. Norman Borlaug of Cresco, Iowa, the plant pathologist whose semi-dwarf wheat varieties drove the Green Revolution and earned him the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize, the 1977 Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the 2007 Congressional Gold Medal. The design, by Artistic Infusion Program artist Don Everhart and sculpted by Medallic Artist Eric David Custer, depicts Borlaug holding a sheaf of wheat with reverse inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IOWA, NORMAN BORLAUG, and FATHER OF THE GREEN REVOLUTION. On a proof finish the wheat heads and Borlaug's coat take frosted, sculpted relief against deeply mirrored fields, the contrast that drives proof Cameo and Deep Cameo grading designations (called Ultra Cameo by NGC).

Proof Innovation Dollars distribute almost exclusively through the U.S. Mint's annual American Innovation Proof Set and the standalone four-coin set, which package all four state designs of the year together. The 2026-S Iowa Proof will appear in both vehicles. San Francisco proof production for the program has trended toward smaller mintages year over year as modern dollar collector demand has softened, with 2024 figures running in the 100,000-coin range across the four state designs and 2025 trimming further. The 2026 figure will not be confirmed until the proof set's official release window and final sales report; until then the entry sits with mintage to be reported. Strike characteristics are essentially uniform across the program: virtually every certified example grades PR69 or PR70, with PR70 Deep Cameo trading at modest premiums in TPG (third-party grading) holders.

For set builders the 2026-S Iowa Proof is one of the four Iowa strike formats, and the entry-level proof acquisition is the original 2026 American Innovation Proof Set packaging. Classification stays Regular because proof entries on the program use the standard badge regardless of mintage; rarity context lives in the prose, not the badge. The 2026 obverse privy mark by Justin Kunz incorporates a Liberty Bell and the inscription 250 to commemorate the United States Semiquincentennial. For broader program context, see the American Innovation Dollar series history.
