About this coinHistory

The Denver striking of the 2009 American Samoa quarter carries the same reverse as the Philadelphia issue: a chief's fue and to'oto'o crossed above an ava bowl, with the inscription "Samoa Muamua Le Atua", "In Samoa, God is First", running along the rim. The satin-finish version with the D mintmark was produced for the 2009 Annual Uncirculated Mint Set, not for general release into circulation or for the separate San Francisco proof program. Denver's run on the satin American Samoa quarter totaled 784,614 pieces, matching the figure recorded for every other Denver Territories satin issue of the year and reflecting the overall Mint Set distribution.

Authentication leans heavily on surface texture. A satin-finish coin shows a uniform matte sheen across both the recessed fields and the raised relief, the product of specially treated dies that have not received the polish applied to either circulation working dies or to traditional San Francisco proof dies. Held at a steady angle under a single light source and rotated, the surface reflects softly and evenly, with none of the bright cartwheel banding that defines a business strike. The composition follows the standard cupronickel-clad quarter pattern at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, with a copper core between two outer cupronickel layers. The mintmark sits as a D below the truncation of Washington's bust on the obverse; no S satin variants exist for any 2009 Territories design. Original Mint Set packaging is the strongest provenance, and PCGS and NGC apply SP or SMS attributions when slabbing raw examples.

The 2009 issue represents the fifth and penultimate year of the Mint's satin-finish program, which ran from 2005 through 2010 across annual uncirculated sets before the Mint returned to brilliant uncirculated finishes in 2011. Denver's satin American Samoa quarter shares its mintage with the five other 2009 Denver satin Territories designs, so collector demand within the tier focuses on grade, packaging integrity, and the relative appeal of the individual reverse design.
