About this coinHistory

Denver's version of the 2009 U.S. Virgin Islands quarter carries the same reverse as its Philadelphia counterpart, the three principal islands depicted across the design, a yellow breast bird perched on a branch of Tyre palm, and the motto "United in Pride and Hope" running along the rim. The satin-finish examples with the D mintmark were produced for the 2009 Annual Uncirculated Mint Set rather than for circulation channels, and Denver's run on this satin issue totaled 784,614 pieces, the same figure recorded for every other 2009 Denver Territories satin design and reflecting the overall Mint Set distribution for the year.

Authentication of a 2009 Denver satin issue starts at the surface. Specially treated dies produce a uniform matte texture that holds consistently across both fields and the raised elements of the design, generating a soft and even reflection rather than the rotating cartwheel luster of a circulation strike or the deep mirror surface of a San Francisco proof. Held under angled light and rotated, the satin surface should glow gently without sweeping bright bands. The composition follows the standard cupronickel-clad quarter pattern at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, with a copper core sandwiched between two outer cupronickel layers. The D mintmark sits below the truncation of Washington's bust on the obverse, and no S satin variants exist for any 2009 Territories design. Original Mint Set packaging is the strongest provenance available, and PCGS and NGC use SP or SMS rather than PR attributions when grading raw examples.

The 2009 Mint Set marks the fifth year of the satin-finish program, which the Mint ran from 2005 through 2010 across its annual uncirculated sets. Many Denver satin Territories quarters remain in original Mint Set packaging today, since the secondary-market premium for unbroken sets has historically tracked closely with the premium for individual gem-graded examples. For broader context on the program and how the satin tier fits within it, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
