About this coinHistory

The Denver striking of the 2009 District of Columbia quarter carries the same Duke Ellington reverse as its Philadelphia counterpart, the composer seated at his piano with the legend "Justice for All", but reaches collectors through a different path. The satin-finish version of this Denver coin was produced specifically for the 2009 Annual Uncirculated Mint Set, a collector product distinct from both the bagged and rolled business strikes shipped into circulation and the mirror-finish proofs struck at San Francisco. Denver's run on the satin DC quarter totaled 784,614 pieces, the same figure recorded for every other DC and Territories design released in satin form during the year.

Authentication of a satin-finish 2009 Denver quarter starts at the surface. The specially treated dies leave a uniform matte appearance across both fields and devices, with no cartwheel luster sweeping across the planchet as the coin is tilted under a light source. That texture is the single most reliable diagnostic separating a satin issue from a business strike in similar condition. Specifications follow the standard cupronickel-clad quarter pattern at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, with a copper core sandwiched between cupronickel outer layers. The mintmark sits as a D below the truncation of Washington's bust on the obverse; no satin S variants exist, and any S-mintmarked 2009 DC quarter will be a mirror-finish proof from a different Mint product. Mint Set packaging remains the cleanest form of original certification, and PCGS and NGC apply SP or SMS attributions to these coins when raw examples are submitted for third-party grading.

The 2009 program represents the fifth year of the satin-finish format, which ran from 2005 through 2010 before the Mint abandoned the treatment in favor of returning to brilliant uncirculated finishes for its annual set. Denver's satin coins from this five-year window remain reasonably available in original Mint Set packaging because most pieces were never broken out, though gem-graded singles in third-party holders command stronger premiums. For broader context on the design program, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
