About this coinHistory

Denver's version of the 2009 Northern Mariana Islands quarter, the final design in the DC and Territories run, carries the same reverse as its Philadelphia counterpart: a Carolinian canoe under sail beneath a pair of fairy terns, with a stylized Latte stone and a chain of palms framing the composition. The satin-finish examples bearing a D mintmark were produced for the 2009 Annual Uncirculated Mint Set rather than for circulation channels, and Denver's run totaled 784,614 pieces, the same mintage recorded for every other Denver Territories design prepared in satin form during the year.

The satin treatment supplies the central authentication diagnostic. Specially prepared dies leave a uniform matte texture across both fields and raised elements, with neither the rotating cartwheel luster characteristic of business strikes nor the deep mirror reflection of San Francisco's traditional proofs. Held at an angle under a single light source and rotated slowly, a properly preserved satin coin shows a soft and even sheen across the entire surface. Composition follows the standard cupronickel-clad quarter pattern at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, with a copper core between two outer cupronickel layers. The D mintmark sits below the truncation of Washington's bust on the obverse, and no S satin variants exist for any 2009 Territories design. Original Mint Set packaging is the strongest form of provenance, and PCGS and NGC apply SP or SMS rather than PR attributions when grading these issues out of original holders.

The 2009 set represents the fifth year of the satin-finish program, which ran from 2005 through 2010 before the Mint reverted to brilliant uncirculated finishes for its annual sets. Denver's Northern Mariana Islands satin issue closes the 2009 Territories run from this facility, and many examples remain housed in original Mint Set holders today, with gem-graded slabbed singles commanding stronger premiums than the same coins still in unbroken sets. For broader context on the program and how the satin tier fits within it, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
