About this coinHistory

Denver's version of the 2009 Guam quarter carries the same reverse, an outline of the island, a Chamorro proa under sail, and a Latte stone with the inscription "Guahan I Tano ManChamorro", that appears on the Philadelphia issue, struck from the same hub-derived dies. The satin-finish examples bearing a D mintmark were produced not for general release but for the 2009 Annual Uncirculated Mint Set, a collector product separate from both the rolled and bagged business strikes and the San Francisco mirror proof program. Denver's satin run came to 784,614 pieces, the same mintage shared across all six Denver satin Territories designs of the year.

The satin treatment is the central authentication detail. Specially prepared dies leave a uniform matte texture across the fields and devices, with neither the rotating cartwheel luster of a circulation-strike planchet nor the deep mirror reflection of a traditional San Francisco proof. Held at an angle and rotated under a single light source, a properly preserved satin coin shows a soft, even glow rather than sweeping bright bands. The composition follows the standard cupronickel-clad quarter pattern at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, with a copper core between two outer cupronickel layers. The D mintmark sits below the truncation of Washington's bust on the obverse, and no satin S variants exist for any 2009 Territories design, any S-marked 2009 Guam quarter is a mirror-finish proof from a different Mint product. Original packaging is the best provenance, while PCGS and NGC apply SP or SMS attributions when grading raw examples.

The 2009 issue marks the fifth year of the satin-finish program, which ran across the Mint's annual uncirculated sets from 2005 through 2010. Many of these Denver satin quarters remain in their original Mint Set holders today, since the relatively low secondary-market premium has historically discouraged breakouts. Gem-graded singles in slabs tend to command stronger premiums than the same coins still housed in their original sets. For broader context on the program, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
