About this coinHistory

2026-04-04, San Francisco struck 993,897 U.S. Virgin Islands silver proofs in 2009 for the year's Silver Proof Set, the collector-tier counterpart to the clad proof in the six-issue Territories program. Joseph Menna's reverse renders the outlines of all three principal islands (St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John) across a horizon line with a yellow breast perched on a sprig of Tyre palm, the territory's official bird and tree. The motto "United in Pride and Hope" arcs along the upper rim. On a 90% silver planchet, the bird's tail feathers and the serrated edges of the palm fronds gain a precision the copper-nickel clad cannot match, the bright white metal lending the tropical subject a sharper documentary quality against the deeply mirrored fields.

Authenticating a 2009-S U.S. Virgin Islands Silver Proof begins at the scale. A genuine silver example weighs 6.25 grams against the 5.67-gram clad proof, and that 0.58-gram differential is the single most efficient diagnostic in the collector's toolkit. The 90% silver, 10% copper composition produces a silvery-white reflective surface noticeably brighter than the slightly grayer clad cast, and viewing the 24.3mm edge straight on reveals a solid silver color rather than the copper-cored sandwich stripe of clad coinage. Squared, sharp rims and heavily frosted Cameo or Deep Cameo devices set against deeply mirrored fields complete the visual signature. Examine the yellow breast's eye and beak, the rachis of each palm frond, and the three-island silhouette under angled light for the heavy frost contrast that defines a properly struck silver proof.

None of the 2009 U.S. Virgin Islands silver proofs entered circulation; all were sold through U.S. Mint Silver Proof Set packaging, and survival rates remain extremely high in pristine grades. The 993,897 mintage marks the lowest silver-proof figure of the eleven-year quarter program. Modern market value reflects both the silver bullion content and the proof finish, with Deep Cameo and PR70 examples carrying the strongest premiums. The three-island layout makes the USVI reverse one of the program's most cartographically literal compositions, and Caribbean-focused collectors often pair the issue with the Puerto Rico silver for a coherent Antilles run.
