About this coinHistory

The 2012-S Acadia clad proof carries Barbara Fox's view of Bass Harbor Head Light, the small white-and-red lighthouse perched on the granite ledge at the southwestern tip of Mount Desert Island. San Francisco struck the issue at 1,225,858 pieces for collector distribution inside the year's two proof products, the 14-coin standard Proof Set and the five-coin Quarters Proof Set. Mintage matches the other four 2012 designs to the unit, a deliberate function of how the Mint packages and ships the sets. The reverse is the third 2012 release and the first ATB proof to depict a lighthouse, a subject the program returns to later in the run with 2013 Fort McHenry.

Proof finish on the issue is the standard San Francisco style: mirrored fields and frosted devices, struck from polished planchets at low press tonnage. Cameo (CAM) and Deep Cameo (DCAM) are the two contrast tiers assigned by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company. DCAM is the default outcome on modern S-mint clad proofs because the working dies receive a chemical etch that frosts the raised relief before each press run. Grade distribution clusters at PR69-DCAM and PR70-DCAM, with both grading services holding pop counts running into the thousands at each tier. The fine textured rendering of the granite ledge and the shadow under the lighthouse keeper's quarters is a useful focus point when evaluating strike completeness, since soft strikes will leave the architectural details flat.

The collector market treats the issue as a year-set or design-set filler at the bottom of the modern proof price ladder. PR69-DCAM examples in NGC or PCGS holders trade for low single digits over set break-up cost, and PR70-DCAM examples sit at a modest tier above that without much registry-driven premium. Counterfeit risk is essentially nil because the price never justifies fabrication. The Acadia reverse is one of the better-regarded 2012 designs aesthetically and tends to outsell the four sister issues when individual quarters move on the auction floor.
