2012-S Denali, Silver, Limited Edition Proof Set Proof

Susan Gamble's reverse for the 2012 Denali design depicts a Dall sheep on a foreground ridge with the snow-shrouded south face of the mountain rising behind, the design released under the name Mount McKinley in 2012 and renamed Denali by Department of the Interior administrative action in August 2015. The Limited Edition Set version of the 2012-S Denali silver proof is physically identical to the standard 2012-S Denali silver proof: same San Francisco strike, same 90% silver and 10% copper planchet at 6.25 grams, same dies, same 24.26-millimeter reeded edge. The catalog separates them because the U.S. Mint sold the issue inside two products. The 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set packaged the five ATB silver quarters with the silver Kennedy half dollar, silver Roosevelt dime, and American Silver Eagle dollar in a black case with a certificate. The 509,637 figure is the 2012 silver-proof distribution anchor.

Authentication anchors on weight, edge, and set packaging. Silver verification resolves cleanly at 6.25 grams against 5.67 grams for clad, with a reeded edge that reads solid silver without the reddish copper-core line a clad strike shows at an angle. PCGS and NGC apply a Silver label to the slab insert on top of the numeric proof grade and the Cameo or Deep Cameo contrast designation. Cameo (CAM) marks moderate frosted-device contrast, and Deep Cameo (DCAM) marks the higher tier and is the default outcome on the issue. The strike-grading diagnostic points are the Dall sheep's curled-horn relief and the rendered glacial ridgelines on the mountain face, both fine-relief features where weak die pressure tends to flatten detail. The Limited Edition layer of authentication is the original case and certificate, which a third-party grader will sometimes record as a slab attribution when documentation is submitted.

Collector pricing follows the set context. Limited Edition Set sales ran roughly 50,000 to 75,000 across 2012, well below the 509,637 silver-proof anchor, but a Denali quarter pulled from a broken set trades at standard 2012-S silver-proof pricing at PR69-DCAM and PR70-DCAM. The premium attaches to intact original packaging and Limited Edition-attributed slabs. The 2015 renaming does not affect collectibility because the 2012 dies and packaging predate the change.
