About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck the 2012-S Chaco Culture clad proof for collector distribution at 1,225,858 pieces, matching the rest of the 2012 ATB proof slate one-for-one because the five quarters shipped as a unit inside both the 14-coin Proof Set and the smaller Quarters Proof Set. Donna Weaver's reverse renders the great house of Pueblo Bonito as it stands at the New Mexico site today, with multiple stories of stacked sandstone masonry and the curved exterior wall that defines the structure. The issue is the second of the year's five releases and the first ATB proof of an archaeological subject, since the 2010 and 2011 designs all honored natural-feature parks.

The strike type is proof: mirrored fields against frosted devices, produced from polished planchets fed through specially prepared dies at slower press speeds than circulating coinage. Cameo (CAM) and Deep Cameo (DCAM) are the two contrast designations applied by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company. DCAM is the default outcome for modern S-mint clad proofs because the obverse and reverse dies are chemically frosted before each strike. The PR70-DCAM tier is achievable in numbers across both services and the issue arrives at certification graders with very clean fields, since the proof sets themselves protect the coin from contact from the moment it leaves the press through encapsulation. No counterfeit market exists at the price point.

Collectors approach the issue as a design-set or year-set companion to the underlying P and D business strikes, not as a standalone target. A raw certified PR69-DCAM example trades near the cost of breaking up a sealed proof set, and PR70-DCAM holders command a modest premium that has flattened across the past several auction cycles. The 2012 proofs as a group sit in the lower-attention stretch of the ATB run because the year's reverse subjects, while strong design-wise, lack the iconic visual recognition of the 2010 Yellowstone or 2010 Grand Canyon entries. For the broader story of the ATB proof program and the series' production arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
