About this coinHistory

San Francisco closed the 2012 ATB silver proof slate with the Denali design, struck on a 90% silver, 10% copper planchet at 6.25 grams under the .900 fine standard. Susan Gamble's reverse renders a Dall sheep ram in the foreground with the south face of Denali rising behind, the design adopted before the national park's 2015 name change from Mount McKinley to its current Athabascan-derived form. The Mint reported 509,637 silver proof sets sold for 2012, the production anchor for every silver entry that year. The fifth and final 2012 release closed the third program year with the highest-elevation subject the ATB run had yet attempted at coin scale, since the mountain summit sits at 20,310 feet, the tallest peak in North America.

Authentication on the issue starts with the 6.25-gram weight against 5.67 grams for the parallel clad proof, the half-gram spread any precision scale resolves cleanly. The reeded edge reads solid silver around the perimeter without the reddish copper-core line a clad strike shows at an angle. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, label silver entries with Silver or the S/Ag abbreviation on the slab insert. Cameo (CAM) and Deep Cameo (DCAM) are the two contrast tiers, and DCAM is the default outcome because the working dies are chemically frosted before each press run. The wool texture on the ram's coat and the snow shading on the mountain ridges are the strike grading diagnostic points; the height variation across the design carries significant relief difference between foreground and background.

The collector market positions the issue as one of the better-recognized 2012 silver proofs because of the wildlife-and-summit composition, which echoes the formula Susan Gamble used on the 2011 Olympic reverse. PR69-DCAM examples trade for a modest premium over the 0.1808 ounce silver-weight value, and PR70-DCAM examples sit a tier above. Silver proof set sales for 2012 fell to their lowest figure in the early ATB silver run, leaving the issue with a thinner print run than either the 2010 or 2011 silver groups while pricing remains modest by modern proof standards.
