About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 1,225,858 pieces of the 2012-S Hawaii Volcanoes clad proof for the year's two collector products, the 14-coin Proof Set and the smaller Quarters Proof Set. Charles Vickers designed the reverse, which captures the Pu'u O'o vent on the East Rift Zone of Kilauea with lava flowing toward the sea. The composition is challenging: textured lava channels, a tree silhouette in the foreground, and ocean surf along the horizon all share the field, and the working dies have to translate three distinct surface treatments cleanly. The issue is the fourth of the five 2012 releases and the only ATB proof to depict an active geological process rather than a fixed landscape feature.

Proof finish follows the standard San Francisco approach: mirrored fields produced from polished planchets struck against dies frosted in chemical baths before each press run. Cameo (CAM) and Deep Cameo (DCAM) are the contrast designations used by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, with DCAM the default outcome on the issue. Grade distribution at the two services sits heavily at PR69-DCAM and PR70-DCAM, and population counts run into the thousands at the top tier. The lava-flow detail is the diagnostic strike area: a properly struck example shows the texture of the cooled crust along the flow channels, while a weak strike flattens that detail into a smooth field. Counterfeit risk is essentially nil for the issue.

Collector demand for the issue is modest and routes through year-set and design-set assembly rather than standalone purchase. A raw certified PR69-DCAM example trades for a few dollars over the cost of cracking out a sealed Proof Set, and a PR70-DCAM in either NGC or PCGS plastic commands a small premium that has held steady rather than appreciated. The Hawaii Volcanoes design is one of the more recognizable 2012 reverses because of the dramatic active-eruption imagery, but pricing has not separated it from its four sister issues in the current market.
