About this coinHistory

Donna Weaver's reverse for the 2012-S Chaco Culture Silver Proof, with its three aligned doorways through the masonry of Pueblo Bonito at Chaco Culture National Historical Park in northwestern New Mexico, appears on this issue exactly as it does on the standard 2012-S Chaco Culture silver proof. The two are the same coin: same dies, same 90% silver and 10% copper planchet, same 6.25 grams, same 24.26 millimeters, same reeded edge. What differs is the product the U.S. Mint sold it inside. The 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set bundled the five ATB silver quarters with the year's silver Kennedy half dollar, silver Roosevelt dime, and an American Silver Eagle dollar, presenting the seven coins in a single black case with a certificate of authenticity. The 509,637 figure remains the year's silver-proof distribution anchor across every 2012 silver entry.

Authentication anchors on two layers. Silver verification runs through weight and edge: 6.25 grams against 5.67 grams for clad, a half-gram spread any jeweler's scale catches, plus a reeded edge that reads solid silver without the copper-core line clad shows under angled light. PCGS and NGC label the slab insert with Silver alongside the proof grade and the Cameo (CAM, moderate frosted-device contrast) or Deep Cameo (DCAM, higher-contrast tier) designation, with DCAM the default outcome on the issue. Set verification is the second layer: the Limited Edition product packaging is distinct from the standard Silver Proof Set cardboard housing, and a complete original-case example, with all seven coins and the certificate present, is what separates the Limited Edition tier from a loose Chaco quarter in the standard catalog.

Collector pricing sorts the issue by its set context. Actual Limited Edition Set sales ran roughly 50,000 to 75,000 across 2012, well below the 509,637 silver-proof anchor, but a loose Chaco quarter shed from a broken set returns to standard 2012-S Chaco Culture silver-proof pricing because the coin itself is the same coin. The premium attaches to intact original packaging and complete-set buyers, particularly Limited Edition Set registry-tier collectors who want all five 2012 ATB silver quarters in their original case.
