About this coinHistory

San Francisco closed the 2012 ATB proof slate with the Denali design at 1,225,858 pieces, the same mintage carried by the year's other four issues because the Mint shipped the quarters as a unit in both the 14-coin Proof Set and the five-coin Quarters Proof Set. Susan Gamble's reverse renders a Dall sheep ram in the foreground with the south face of Denali rising behind, the design adopted before the park's 2015 name change from Mount McKinley to its current form. The fifth and final 2012 release closed the second program year with the highest-elevation subject the ATB run had yet attempted, since the mountain summit sits at 20,310 feet.

Proof finish on the issue is the San Francisco standard: mirrored fields and frosted devices, struck from polished planchets fed against chemically frosted dies at slower-than-circulating press speeds. Cameo (CAM) and Deep Cameo (DCAM) are the two contrast designations PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, apply on top of the numeric grade. DCAM is the default outcome because the dies are frosted before each press run rather than only at the start of the production cycle. Grade distribution clusters at PR69-DCAM and PR70-DCAM with thousands of examples at each tier in the major service pop reports. The wool texture on the ram's coat and the snow shading on the mountain ridges are the strike diagnostic points for the issue. Counterfeit risk is essentially nil at the price point.

The issue trades at modern-proof clearance pricing, with PR69-DCAM examples a few dollars over set break-up cost and PR70-DCAM examples commanding a small premium that has compressed as registry-set competition for the modern ATB proof run has cooled. Collector interest moves through year-set assembly and design-set completion rather than standalone purchase. The Denali reverse is one of the better-recognized 2012 designs because of the wildlife-and-summit composition, which echoes a long American tradition of mountain imagery on coinage and currency.
