About this coinHistory

Barbara Fox's reverse for the 2012 Acadia design depicts Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse perched on the granite headland of Mount Desert Island, the southwestern shoreline of Acadia National Park in coastal Maine. The Limited Edition Set version of the 2012-S Acadia silver proof is physically identical to the standard 2012-S Acadia silver proof: same San Francisco strike, same 90% silver and 10% copper planchet, same 6.25 grams under the .900 fine standard, same dies, same reeded edge. The catalog separates them because the U.S. Mint sold the issue inside two different products. The 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set bundled the five ATB silver quarters with the silver Kennedy half dollar, silver Roosevelt dime, and American Silver Eagle dollar in a black presentation case with a certificate. The 509,637 figure is the 2012 silver-proof distribution anchor and applies to every 2012 silver entry.

Authentication runs the standard silver-proof routine plus a packaging check. Weight separates silver from clad cleanly at 6.25 grams versus 5.67 grams, and the reeded edge on the issue reads solid silver without the reddish copper-core line a clad strike shows under angled light. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, label slabbed examples with Silver alongside the proof grade. Cameo (CAM) marks moderate frosted-device contrast, and Deep Cameo (DCAM) marks the higher tier and is the default outcome on the issue. The Limited Edition-specific check is the original case and certificate, and slabs from third-party graders sometimes carry an attribution to the Limited Edition pedigree when submitted with case documentation.

Collector value separates the loose coin from the intact set. Limited Edition Set sales ran roughly 50,000 to 75,000 across 2012, far below the 509,637 silver-proof anchor, so the genuine scarcity is the original packaging, not the coin. A graded PR69-DCAM or PR70-DCAM Acadia removed from its set trades at the standard 2012-S Acadia silver-proof level. An intact Limited Edition Set with all seven pieces and original case sells as a set, and a Limited-Edition-attributed slab can carry a small premium with set-builder buyers.
