About this coinHistory

Charles Vickers's reverse for the 2012 Hawaii Volcanoes design renders an erupting lava flow from the Pu'u O'o vent on Kilauea's east rift, the same vent that had been in continuous eruption since 1983 and remained active at the 2012 strike date. The Limited Edition Set version of the 2012-S Hawaii Volcanoes silver proof is physically the same coin as the standard 2012-S Hawaii Volcanoes silver proof: same San Francisco strike, same 90% silver and 10% copper planchet at 6.25 grams under the .900 fine standard, same dies, same 24.26-millimeter reeded edge. The catalog tracks them separately because the U.S. Mint distributed the issue inside two different products. The 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set packaged the five ATB silver quarters alongside the year's silver Kennedy half dollar, silver Roosevelt dime, and American Silver Eagle dollar in a black case with a certificate. The 509,637 figure is the 2012 silver-proof distribution anchor.

Authentication on the issue follows the standard silver-proof routine plus a Limited Edition packaging check. Weight resolves silver from clad without ambiguity at 6.25 grams versus 5.67 grams on a calibrated scale, and the reeded edge reads solid silver without the copper-core line a clad strike shows under angled light. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, attach a Silver label to the slab insert alongside the proof grade. Cameo (CAM) marks moderate frosted-device contrast and Deep Cameo (DCAM) marks the higher tier, with DCAM the default outcome on the issue. The dual-eruption-plume relief and the textured-lava-flow rendering are the strike diagnostic points where weak press pressure tends to flatten detail.

Collector value sorts the issue by set context, not by raw mintage. Limited Edition Set sales ran roughly 50,000 to 75,000 across 2012, well below the silver-proof anchor of 509,637, so the premium attaches to the intact original packaging rather than the coin. A graded Hawaii Volcanoes quarter pulled from a broken set returns to standard 2012-S Hawaii Volcanoes silver-proof pricing at PR69-DCAM and PR70-DCAM. Intact Limited Edition Sets and slabs carrying a Limited Edition attribution command a small premium with set-completion collectors.
