Kennedy Half Dollars

The first Kennedy half dollars were struck in January 1964, and the public response was immediate and overwhelming. People lined up at banks to get the new coins, and most of them were immediately saved as mementos of the slain president rather than spent. The hoarding was universal. The 1964 Kennedy half dollar, struck in 90% silver at 12.5 grams, had a combined mintage of over 430 million pieces across Philadelphia and Denver, an enormous quantity that was insufficient to meet demand. People who had never collected a coin in their lives wanted a Kennedy half dollar, and many of them wanted several.

The composition changed in 1965 to 40% silver clad, reducing the silver content while maintaining some precious metal. This reflected the same silver crisis that was transforming the dime and quarter to base-metal clad, though Congress was reluctant to remove silver from Kennedy's coin entirely so soon after the assassination. The 40% silver composition continued through 1970, with the 1970-D being the last regular-issue silver half dollar. Beginning in 1971, the Kennedy half dollar switched to the same copper-nickel clad used for the dime and quarter. The Bicentennial half dollars of 1976, dual-dated 1776-1976 with Seth Huntington's Independence Hall reverse, were also struck in a 40% silver version for collector sets.

The Kennedy half dollar's great paradox is that it was too popular to circulate. The hoarding that began in 1964 never fully stopped. People saved Kennedy halves out of respect, out of habit, out of the vague belief that they were worth more than fifty cents. Silver issues were hoarded for their metal content. Clad issues were hoarded because people had been hoarding half dollars for years and did not see a reason to stop. The result was that the Kennedy half dollar gradually disappeared from everyday commerce despite being produced in large quantities. By the 1970s and 1980s, half dollars were rare in pocket change. By the 2000s, most Americans under forty had never received one in a transaction. The Mint kept making them, in diminishing quantities, largely to satisfy collector demand and the needs of casinos, which used half dollars in slot machines long after the rest of the economy had abandoned them.

The 2014 50th Anniversary set produced a special group of coins that included a gold Kennedy half dollar struck at West Point, along with silver versions from Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco (Enhanced Mint State), and West Point (Reverse Proof). The set was the most ambitious Kennedy half dollar product the Mint had ever offered, and it sold well. The 2019-S Enhanced Reverse Proof, with a mintage of 99,998, has become one of the more sought-after modern half dollar issues.

Among regular issues, nothing in the Kennedy series is rare. The 1964 Accented Hair proof variety, where Kennedy's hair shows more detailed styling than the standard proof, is the most collected variety from the early years. The 1974-D Doubled Die Obverse and the 1972 No "FG" (missing Gasparro's initials) are popular errors. The 1970-D is a semi-key as the last silver business strike, produced only for inclusion in Mint Sets and not released for general circulation. The 1987-P and 1987-D, struck only for Mint Sets during a year when no business-strike half dollars were produced for circulation, occupy a similar niche.

Proofs have been struck every year since 1964, initially at Philadelphia and from 1968 onward at San Francisco. Silver proofs returned in 1992 and have been produced annually since. The 1964 proof and the 1964 Accented Hair proof are the pieces collectors focus on from the early period, while the silver proofs from 1992 forward are the standard collector issues for the modern era.

Fifty cents has not been a useful amount of money for decades, and the Kennedy half dollar's absence from everyday commerce reflects that reality. The coin survives as a collector item, a casino token, and a ceremonial piece rather than as a functioning unit of exchange. The 2026 Semiquincentennial dual-dated issue, the latest entry in the series, continues a tradition that has run for over sixty years, but nobody pretends that new Kennedy half dollars will circulate. They will be bought by collectors, put in albums, and stored in safes and safety deposit boxes, continuing the pattern of non-circulation that has defined the denomination since the day it was issued. Kennedy's half dollar was born from tragedy, embraced by a grieving nation, and saved to death. It is the most collected half dollar in American history and the least spent.
