Washington Quarters (America the Beautiful)

The early years of the program benefited from residual enthusiasm left over from the Statehood Quarters. People were accustomed to checking their change for new designs, and the national park theme had broad appeal. The first five issues in 2010, Hot Springs, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, and Mount Hood, were released to solid public interest. The Mint struck hundreds of millions of each design across Philadelphia and Denver, maintaining the high-volume approach that had defined the Statehood program. San Francisco continued producing clad and silver proofs, and Satin Finish coins appeared in the 2010 Mint Sets before that format was discontinued.

Collector interest introduced some wrinkles the Statehood program had not seen. Beginning in 2012, the San Francisco Mint struck business-strike-quality quarters with the S mintmark for inclusion in bags and rolls sold directly to collectors. These were not intended for circulation and carry the NIFC designation, making them distinct from the clad proofs that San Francisco also produced. The mintages were modest, typically a few hundred thousand per design, and they represent the scarcest regular-production coins in the series. In 2019, the Mint added West Point to the mix, releasing W-mintmark quarters into general circulation as a promotion to encourage coin collecting. The 2019-W quarters were distributed through banks in limited quantities, and finding one in pocket change generated genuine excitement among collectors. The 2020-W quarters carried a V75 privy mark honoring the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, adding another layer of variety.

The 2018 issues are notable for the San Francisco Mint Silver Reverse Proof set, which produced all five designs in a reverse proof format with 90% silver composition. These were a departure from the standard proof presentation and have become sought-after collector pieces.

Design quality across the program was uneven, as it had been with the Statehood Quarters. Some parks translated beautifully to the quarter format. Others, particularly those with complex landscapes or detailed architecture, suffered from the compression into a small coin. The best designs tended to feature a single strong image, an animal, a geological formation, a clear architectural element, while the worst tried to depict panoramic vistas that turned to mush at 24 millimeters.

The program concluded in 2021 with the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site quarter, a fitting endpoint that honored both a place and the people associated with it. Total production across twelve years ran to billions of coins, and like the Statehood Quarters before them, no regular circulation issue is scarce. The S-mint NIFC coins and the W-mint releases are the pieces collectors focus on, along with the silver proofs and reverse proofs.

Twenty-five cents bought even less during the ATB era than it had during the Statehood years. By 2021, a quarter was essentially a change-making coin, useful in parking meters and laundromats but not much else. The quarters themselves circulated alongside billions of Statehood issues still in the money supply, and most people could not have told you which program a given quarter in their pocket belonged to. The America the Beautiful quarters served their purpose as a continuation of the rotating-design concept, keeping the quarter visually interesting in an era when fewer people were paying with cash at all.
